* Seminar: Key Competencies for Second Life Moderators - Starts today!
Facilitator: Gilly Salmon
February 7 - 16, 2008
Many educators are familiar with Salmon's 5 stage model for e-moderating. How should this model be revised for Second Life moderators? Gilly invites all SCoPE members to join her in a 10-day discussion to identify the key competencies required of moderators in a virtual world. This work will inform the upcoming SL training for moderators, as part of the MOOSE project (MOdelling Of SecondLife Environments).

* Seminar and Live Session: Teaching and Learning Centres Revisited
Facilitators: Vivian Neal and Alice Cassidy
Live Session Moderator: Amy Severson
February 18 - 24, 2008
In the summer of 2007, SCoPE members took part in an international dialogue about the range of programs and services offered at teaching and learning centres (TLCs) in post secondary institutions. During this one-week seminar in February we will revisit this topic to expand and compare the list of programs and services offered through TLCs. This seminar coincides with a live session planned in conjunction with the 2008 Educational Developers Caucus organized by Kwantlen University College and Simon Fraser University. Everyone is invited to attend the Elluminate session on February 22 11:00 PST, GMT -8 which will be broadcast live from the EDC conference.

* SCoPE Seminar: First Nations Pedagogy for Online Learning
Facilitator: June Kaminski
March 3 - 31, 2008
Many campuses and support units have special programs in place to ensure success of Aboriginal learners, recognizing that a supportive environment will contribute to a positive educational experience. However, online delivery of courses specifically targeting Aboriginal learners is relatively new and is on the increase. The question of what this means in terms of course design, instructional strategies, and building supportive learning communities, remains a challenge to many instructors. This seminar discussion marks the launch of the First Nations Pedagogy for Online Learning Project funded by BCcampus.ca and led by Nicola Valley Institute of Technology in partnership with Kwantlen University College.

* SCoPE Seminar: Rethinking Teaching in the Sciences
Facilitator: Gina Bennett
April 7 - 27, 2008
This seminar is the first in a "rethinking teaching" series. New techniques and new technologies enable us to teach science in exciting new ways. Or do they? Can science be taught at a distance? What exactly is science education, anyway? Join us for our second seminar discussion organized in collaboration with the British Columbia Educational Technology Users Group (ETUG)

* Seminar: Intellectual Property
Facilitator: Dan McGuire
January 9 - 29, 2008
The questions related to intellectual property are endless, and the answers can be unclear. Who owns online courses? What materials can be used, and how can they be used? What are the risks of 'cut and paste' when designing your course? Dan warned us that there are no easy answers to these questions-- that "every case is truly unique, with many differing yet valid answers". Was he ever right!

* Online Conference: Platforms for Communities of Practice - Long Live the Platform
January 14 - February 1, 2008
What's the best platform on which communities of practice can gather? During this three-week conference we looked at many different platforms (new and old) through the eyes of their communities. Our virtual field trips caused us to both question and defend the platform, and fed our imaginations with what is possible.

Ocean Growing More Acidic Faster Than Once Thought; Increasing Acidity Threatens Sea Life
Scientists have documented that the ocean is growing more acidic faster than previously thought. In addition, they have found that the increasing acidity correlates with increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The increasingly acidic water harms certain sea animals and could reduce the ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide.

Ocean Currents Off South Africa Influence Gulf Stream
Variations in the strength of the Gulf Stream can in part attributed to currents off South Africa. Oceanographers developed a computer model to study the currents systems in unsurpassed detail. To their surprise, they found the impact of small-scale fluctuations of the Agulhas Current south of Africa is detectable all the way into the North Atlantic Ocean.

Self-Expanding Stents in Benign Esophageal Strictures
Publication year: 2008
Source: Techniques in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Volume 10, Issue 4, October 2008, Pages 164-174

Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) have gained a wide consensus in the treatment of malignant dysphagia. The small diameter of the delivery system has reduced the morbidity related to their placement. These stents could be a reasonable option also in patients with benign refractory esophageal strictures. Two types of stents have been used: self-expandable plastic stent (SEPS; Polyflex®) and SEMS. Fluoroscopy is recommended, and predeployment dilation should be performed when a SEPS is placed. SEMS should be completely covered with a silicone layer that opposes the granulomatous ingrowth through the meshes, which prevents imbedding and allows easy retrieval. Migration represents the...
